You
could call it an exciting game, especially in the first few minutes.
And, after Tech quickly went up 28-0, it was definitely fun. After all,
we have football back at Bobby Dodd Stadium...and on a Thursday night at
that.
But, drama, there was not.
Kind of like getting your hands on a pound bag of M&Ms.
Nothing like it for a few minutes. But, after 20 or so of the little
buggers...not so much.
Shows you about the daily thrills of my life.
But, back to the game.
No one, short of a hundred of so loyal Catamount fans who
made the 154 mile drive down from Cullowhee, N.C., thought this was
actually going to be a competition.
But, hey! At least they weren't in Cullowhee!
After all, this was the WCU team that finished last in their 10
team SOCON conference last year with a 2-9 record. They lost their last
six games by a combined score of 72-224...an FCS opponent with a record
of 10-46 since the beginning of the 2006 season.
So, everyone knew the Yellow Jackets were not facing off
against the Crimson Tide.
63 Points is nothing to sneeze at, even against a far lesser
opponent. But, if you're one of those people who has to find a negative
in everything, you did have a morsel or two to nibble on...namely a few
sloppy plays that allowed the Cat fans a moment or two of fleeting
joy...something to give them hope as they host Mars Hill in their home
opener next Saturday.
The Jackets struggled all night long to hold on to the ball.
They lost two of six fumbles. A second-quarter punt got blocked and
recovered for a touchdown. Late in the first quarter, Tech B-back
Charles Perkins dropped a fumble at the Jacket 31, picked up by Western
Carolina's Rainey Ala. Western Carolina went three-and-out. Then that
was followed by another error as Tech's Euclid Cummings fumbled the punt
return at the Georgia Tech 4 that led to a quick Catamount TD.
That's about all anyone could complain about. But, make
half of these errors against opponents like Virginia Tech or Georgia and
there will be more than a few moments of joy on the other sideline.
The Yellow Jackets cranked out 662 yards of total
offense - their most productive game since 2000 and the third most in
team history. The 28 first quarter points were tied the 2007 Sanford
game for the most one quarter points scored by any Tech team.
Three players set career highs. Washington was 8 for 13
for 271 yards and three touchdowns. Backup QB Synjyn Days was 3 of 3 for
94 yards. Steven Hill caught four passes for 181 yards.
Georgia Tech heads to Middle Tennessee State for its
first road game of the season at 7:00pm Saturday. The game will be
televised on ESPN3.
