Georgia Tech
Ranked #10 on SI list of best college game-day traditions

Of course, there's the game inside Bobby Dodd Stadium.
That's the main attraction for most Yellow Jacket fans, students and alumnus
attending home games on North Avenue.
But, SI.Com sees a lot more going on making game day
on the Flats one of the top three ACC experiences along
with Clemson and FSU.
They site Georgia Tech's Ramblin' Wreck as a key reason. Fans know
things are ready to start when Buzz is introduced and flings himself into
the middle of the Georgia Tech Marching Band at midfield. Dazed and
confused, he rambles into the goalpost at the stadium's north endzone. Buzz
vaults into the stands and is hoisted row by row all the way to the top.
The band takes its cue and launches into "Rambling Wreck From Georgia Tech
as the restored 1930 Model A Ford Sport coupe bursts through the paper
Yellow Jacket logo leading the football team onto the field. The cherished
car makes its way around the stadium carrying the busy Buzz and a bevy of
cheerleaders to the cheering throngs.
The column ranked Tech's goosebump-giving car ride #10 on Sports
Illustrated's list of best game-day traditions.
The rest of the top 10 had Ohio State #1 with a 75-year-old tradition of
the marching band spelling out the script "O-H-I-O." #2 is Auburn when Nova
the golden eagle soars overhead and lands near the 50-yard line as almost
90,000 fans scream, "W-a-a-a-r Eagle!"
Texas A&M comes in #3 as A&M students take their role as the 12th Man
very seriously - so much so that the night before home games, roughly 20,000
students gather at Kyle Field for a de facto pep rally.
#4 is Army-Navy. Clemson is #5 as Tigers rub Howard's Rock for good
luck as they charge down the hill behind the east end zone.
Others showing up are Florida State with the Seminoles chief riding his
horse and planting a flaming spear, Wisconsin and Notre Dame.
Not bad company. |
