Georgia Tech will try to keep the momentum going from a two game winning streak as they host another struggling ACC opponent. Saturday, North Carolina comes in off a disappointing 27-17 loss to rival Duke last weekend in Chapel Hill. They lead again in the fourth quarter, as they had in all their games. But, again, they blew that lead being outscored 14-0. The Tar Heels' 1-3 record through four games is their worst start since 2013. UNC is 0-2 in ACC play for the first time since 2014 (the Heels started 2-0 in conference action last season and went 8-0 in league play in 2015). North Carolina's defense, which returned seven starters from last year's 8-5 squad, has allowed 23 points or more in every game this season and is surrendering 33.0 points per game on the year.
But, the Tar Heels have given the Yellow Jackets problems in recent years, winning the last three. And, they've done well on the road, winning ten of their last eleven away from home.
Tech head coach Paul Johnson said this year's Tar Heel team is completely different than the one that beat the Jackets in 2015. "They got a few guys hurt. Offensively, they lost the first pick in the draft at quarterback (Mitch Trubinsky). Now with the Proehl kid (Austin) being injured, they lost everyone who played a year ago.
"Some different offensive linemen and rubbing backs. So, they're a different team. Some of what we experienced in 2015.
UNC has actually only won at Bobby Dodd Stadium once in the last twenty years. Not helping has been the number of injuries to key players. Austin Proehl, Thomas Jackson and Rontavius Groves, among his best receivers, are hurt. Jackson is lost for the season. Groves and Proehl might be as well. Also gone for the year is starting offensive lineman, William Sweet. OL Tommy Hatton, hasn't practiced since suffering a concussion early in the season. Several others have been hurt as well.
During his Monday press conference, North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora said he had never experienced such a rash of injuries. "No," he said...six times..."No, no, no, no, no, no."
Last week, Tech outgained Pitt by nearly 250 yards (484-235) despite committing a season-high four turnovers. They continue to lead the nation in rushing offense (393.7 ypg). Tech BB KirVonte Benson (196) and QB TaQuon Marshall (112) both rushed for at least 100 yards for the second time in three games this season. Marshall and Benson rank second and third in rushing in the ACC.
But, the Jackets' defense was the story of the win forcing seven three-and-outs in 13 defensive series and limited the Panthers to just 37 rushing yards in the convincing victory.
For the season, the Ramblin' Wreck has forced 19 three-and-outs in 37 defensive series (51.4 percent). The only team in the nation that has forced three-and-outs at a higher clip this season is Michigan (30 in 53 possessions - 56.6 percent).
Next up, Georgia Tech has another originally unscheduled bye as the plan for a trip to Miami on October 14.
